Packaging 'To Go': Catering to the Takeaway Food Industry
Across the Middle East to the UK and Europe,
INDEVCO affiliates are exporting an increasing range of corrugated
and paper packaging for takeaway meals.
More than ever, modern lifestyles are equated with out-of-home eating,
meals “to go” and “takeaway” services. The
onslaught of fast food franchises in the Middle East has created
a burgeoning catering disposables market, particularly over the
past decade.
INDEVCO Group consolidated its position as a powerful supplier to
this vertical market in 2001, when it centralized export sales of
its Middle Eastern affiliates. Such a move has facilitated sales,
customer service, and supply of products to top international fast
food franchises and related companies.
Product Range
Today, eight INDEVCO plants in Egypt, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia
produce branded and generic takeaway packaging from across the group’s
three business divisions: paper and containerboard, flexible packaging,
and consumer disposables.
Beginning with printed table napkins over two decades ago, the group’s
catering disposable portfolio has expanded with ongoing franchise
openings. Today, INDEVCO plants supply pizza boxes, burger boxes,
‘to go’ paper bags and paper sheets for sandwiches.
All are recyclable.
A logical extension, consumer disposable plants in Lebanon and Saudi
Arabia began cross-selling other high-volume products, such as janitorial
supplies. Franchises are an important target market for jumbo toilet
tissue rolls and paper hand towels, as well as kitchen foil and
plastic cling film.
Target Markets
In addition to well-known international franchises, INDEVCO plants
have diversified their product offerings for other companies in
the food and beverage industry.
In Egypt, one INDEVCO affiliate concentrates on producing other
than branded pizza boxes. A major part of Unipak Nile’s total
exports are generic pizza boxes destined for pizza supply distributors
in the United Kingdom.
In another case, Dammam-based National Composite Packaging Technology
(COMPACT) has become a third-party supplier of such products as
ketchup and sugar sachets and aluminium top web for peelable container
lids. These products are sold to direct suppliers of franchises
in certain Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.
In Lebanon, Unipak developed a plat du jour
delivery box in 1996, which is widely used today by nutritional
centers and fine dining establishments.
Flexible Supply
INDEVCO’s export structure offers logistical advantage to
food and beverage leaders in the region. Within a product division,
plants operate in different countries. Shipment from one country
over another depends on delivery destination, free trade agreements
and customs duties. Further, if a plant is operating at capacity,
INDEVCO can still supply the same high quality product from a sister
company.
In the future, INDEVCO Group will further consolidate its position
as a preferred takeaway packaging supplier by continuing to attend
to environmental issues. Next steps include furthering eco-friendly
manufacturing processes, developing biodegradable packaging solutions,
and leading educational awareness campaigns about recycling.
